We are always interested in hearing more about the individuals in food banking across Canada! This month, our spotlight is on Mike MacDonald the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry and PEI Food Banks.
What is your role in food banking?
I am the Executive Director/General Manager of the Upper Room Hospitality Ministry and PEI Food Banks. We operate a Food Bank, Soup Kitchen and Provincial Association.
Describe a typical day in one word.
Service – every day we are serving our clients, our community, our province, and our Food Banks.
What was your inspiration to get involved in food banking?
I’m not sure what inspired me to get involved with food banking but I can tell you what keeps me involved. Every day I see and help people in need. It constantly reminds how well I have it and feel obligated to help. Over the years, I have been put in a position that allows me to help and serve people in my community. I am extremely grateful for this.
What is your greatest achievement in your current role?
The respect the Upper Room has gained in our community over the years. We continuously strive to provide exceptional service to our clients, donors, volunteers, and anyone we may come in contact with. I want people in need to feel comfortable coming to the Food Bank and I want our donors to know and feel their donations make a difference.
What is the greatest challenge in your current role?
Being able to shut off from work. There are many demands at all times and every day of the week.
If you could have one wish granted that would address hunger in Canada what would it be?
I wish everyone had access to nutritious and healthy food as well as affordable housing.
Which talent would you most like to have?
To be able to play an instrument.
If you could tell your younger self advice, what would it be?
To make time for people. It is important to take the time and talk to people, especially our clients. They are the reason we do the work we do. We need to understand their challenges and struggles to find the best way to help.
Who are your heroes? Fictional or real life
My Parents, and all of our volunteers. Their passion and dedication our volunteers show to our clients amaze me each and every day.
What is your idea of happiness?
Being with family and friends.
What is your motto?
If you believe, you can achieve.
Something quirky about you that others may not expect or know?
I have no musical talent what so ever.
Your theme song?
With Or Without You – U2
